The Pierre Fauchard Academy Northern California Section presented Dr. Stuart A. Gansky (MS, DrPH), Director of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Center to Address Disparities in Children's Oral Health (CAN DO), with its 2013 Faculty Recognition Award at an awards ceremony on August 17, 2013 for teaching and mentoring in dentistry. 

He was nominated for the award by UCSF School of Dentistry Dean John Featherstone.

Young people who don’t get the routine dental care they need find themselves at a disadvantage, studies have shown: not just in overall health but also in school performance.

Now a study from the Pew Charitable Trusts finds that California is among the 10 states where low-income children are least likely to receive dental care.

Academic Pediatrics

Academic Pediatrics recently published the results of a new study by CAN DO member Amy Beck, which found that Latino and African-American families had increased their consumption of fruit juices with similarly high sugar levels as sodas.

Beck concluded that the mixed messages parents were receiving about fruit juices had contributed significantly to this lateset development in public health.
