Dr. Joel White received his dental degree in 1983 from the Ohio State University and his master’s degree in dental materials in 1985 from the University of Michigan. 

Dr. White is Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, in the School of Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. White is a full-time faculty, clinician, educator and dental scientist.

He has practiced as a general dentist for 40 years, serving the oral health needs of 5 generations of patients.

Dr. White is educating his second generation of predoctoral dental students at UCSF. He is a dedicated educator, student advocate and mentor and is internationally recognized for teaching general dentistry, preparing dental students for clinical care as well as educating and supervising clinical care provided by general dentistry residents at UCSF.

He is active in applied, clinical and translational team science research.  His work focuses on dental diagnosis, risk assessment, highly preventive, minimally invasive, evidence-based dentistry supported by clinical practice guidelines, clinical decision support, dental informatics and quality metrics, patient safety, oral health disparities and artificial intelligence in dentistry.
